THE WINERY

COSTA DELLE PARRACINE

The Estate, located in the Forio area, has a great history, as evidenced by the wonderful 1878 winery entirely carved into the green tuff of Mount Epomeo, where the vinification and aging of the wines will take place. It boasts about 4 hectares of vineyards plunging toward the sea, planted in the early 2000s. The grape varieties present are Biancolella (about 2.5 hectares) and Forastera (about 1.5 hectares), growing on soils of entirely volcanic origin and, consequently, rich in minerals. The average age of the vineyards is 25 years.

Costa delle Parracine – whose name evokes the tradition of dry-stone walls (the parracine precisely) that protect the terracing hosting the vineyards – aims to express the extraordinary complexity of the Island of Ischia. A complexity born from the intensity of the volcanic soils and the resulting mineral richness that nourishes the vineyards. Extraordinary soils, enhanced by a viticulture devoted to biodiversity, supported by a microclimate in which sun and wind coexist during the day while, at night, the low temperatures allow the vines to breathe.

WINE PRODUCTION ON ISCHIA

AN ANCIENT HISTORY

Wine production on Ischia has very ancient origins, dating back to the early Middle Ages, with the discovery of amphorae used for the wine trade likely from the 9th century BC. A document from 1036 AD (the bequest of Count Marino and his wife Teodora to the Church) proves that viticulture was prevalent on the island. The numerous monastic communities on the island continued this tradition throughout the Middle Ages. This ancient map testifies to the almost exclusively volcanic composition of the island's soils.

Le Parracine, dry-stone walls built centuries ago by the hands of master parracinai, are crafted from the precious green tuff stone quarried from Mount Epomeo. Their function is to delimit and protect the crops and vineyards of the island of Ischia from wind and bad weather, but over time they have become a characteristic feature of the Ischia landscape, accompanying visitors along numerous paths. Those who visit Ischia soon realize it is an island characterized, not only by the Sea, but also by the power of the mountains and the strength of the Earth. The name "Costa delle Parracine" aims to represent both places.

The label represents a circumscribed area that is the island, but also a trace that represents the Parracine that protect the territory and therefore also the vineyard and its buildings. Within it, a rabbit moves around, called Liparina on Ischia, an animal of great tradition for the inhabitants of the Island.
