Fresh, full-bodied, fragrant wine: aging softens its sharp edges and the result is savory, smooth, rounded. A black-berried grape variety, originally from the Gironde and widespread internationally, which has found its finest expression in Friuli Venezia Giulia and in the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali area in particular. The earliest references date back to the 1700s, but in Friuli it appears only at the end of the 1800s in the Cividale area and at an Exhibition in 1921. As early as 1933, Prof. Dalmasso tasted excellent samples of it, as he wrote in “Agricoltura friulana,” and after the Cividale Exhibition he considered Merlot a grape variety also suited to producing age-worthy wines.
