A complex and harmonious wine, it balances savouriness with the freshness of citrus notes that lend it persistence. A very important grape variety, native to Burgundy, derived from a mutation of Pinot Noir, introduced in Friuli Venezia Giulia as early as the beginning of the 1800s, as evidenced by an analysis of must from Ruländer - Pineau gris dated 1847. At the Austrian Enological Congress held in Gorizia, its spread was recommended "wherever the aim is to produce fine white wines of the very highest order," and in 1896 it appears, together with Pinot Bianco, among the imported varieties diffused in Friuli. It prefers fresh environments and has found its natural habitat in the northernmost hills of the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC area. It is certainly the most celebrated Friulian wine in the world, having enjoyed considerable success for a long time.
